Changing the frames-per-second when shooting a film can result in a variety of effects–for instance, slow motion. Slow motion is typically achieved by shooting at a fast speed and then projecting at a normal speed. Slow motion has many uses, from sport sequences to love scenes, from acts of violence to other examples. Here, in Maya Deren’s Ritual in Transfigured Time (1944-45), slow motion is used to accentuate the movement of dancers.
